“VW GTI pt 1” by Gary Cooper, Contributing Writer

It is widely believed that men consider their cars to be an extension of themselves. However, it is also understood that a large percentage of us only consider a vehicle as a means to provide transportation from point a to point b. Whatever your preferences are, why not do it in style, with a vehicle that provides versatility for daily driving or pleasure.

The Volkswagen GTI satisfies those desires, but is a vehicle that requires extensive research before purchasing, due to the quality problems that German vehicles are notorious for, whether new or used – In this case used. A discussion we will explore in detail later.

Hatchbacks were not always a popular vehicle of choice within North America, until recently – for various reasons, among them the notion that “bigger is better and safer.” The GTI nevertheless, has always had a following due to the versatility of customization to ones tastes, in relation to either looks or speed. However, the model continued to lag against the offerings from various manufacturers (many of them Japanese) in OEM performance, looks and to a great extent – reliability, during the latter part of the
nineties and first few years of the millennium.

Fast forward to 2006 when VW introduced – to the North America, a vehicle that pays homage to its roots by redesigning both the interior and exterior, while successfully adding utility, raw power and “fun to drive” dynamics. Such essentials are significant in order for a vehicle to compliment an individual’s fashionable lifestyle.

Here are the specs of our 2007 test vehicle.

  • Automatic
  • 2.0L 4-cyl. turbo charged engine
  • Tiptronic DSG (direct shift gearbox)
  • Up to 21 cty/29 hwy mpg
  • MP3 Player
  • Side/Curtain Airbags
  • Stability Control
  • Traction Control
  • Sunroof
  • IPod/Aux input
  • Satellite radio (Pre-wired)

Unfortunately to the casual reader, the specs of the vehicle aren’t very impressive. Yet, it
is the hands on experience where one begins to comprehend the “viciousness” of its capabilities.

Part two will explain this experience and also highlight the task of choosing the
right vehicle and where it fits within your lifestyle.
